Maverick's Cove (and PoM - Peace of Mind ... Happy Life!) is offering full 1:1 transcripts for our podcasts. Besides the karaoke style of our podcasts (in video format) Maverick's Cove likes to make the audio accessible to those who can’t hear it. According to the British Deaf Society, there are an estimated 9 million people in the UK who are Deaf or hard of hearing. (Rec.: In the USA, SiriusXM is currently facing a lawsuit for failing to provide transcripts for its podcasts.)

There are serval more benefits to have a transcript for our podcasts.

People as non-native speakers who have less English skills might use transcriptions to help understand our spoken content, and of course, some people just consume content visually. Whilst these users might not listen to podcasts, they might still benefit from our transcripts. It's the easiest way to make our audio content accessible to them.

It helps journalists write about our podcasts

Naturally, by the given mission of Maverick's Cove we like to reach out to the maximum number of possible users. With our transcripts, we can attract journalists and press for our podcasts. Having a transcript is a real bonus. Journalists writing about podcasts listen to a lot of shows, and they won’t always (if ever) be taking notes as they listen. Our 1:1 transcripts inclusive of time stamps can help them find accurate quotes to use in articles and reviews, check spellings, and find more quickly parts they’d like to re-listen to more. This all makes the journalist’s job easier, and we want to make writing about our unique podcast as easy as possible.

Transcripts helps with SEO

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is all about making Maverick Cove's unique content easy to find. Uploading our transcripts add extra content and more mentions of keywords that can be found by search engines.

Transcripts help you as a listener or reader and community member and the Maverick's Cove Team a quick fact-check With our blog articles, podcasts, social media postings, video products etc. ... we give our audiences information all the time, and it’s important that information is always correct. Fact-checking during the editing makes this process much quicker.

Transcripts help to engage

It may seem strange to us as audio makers, but many guests won’t listen to their episode after recording, even if you specifically ask them to. This might be because they are busy, but it might be because most people don’t actually like listening to their own voice. Sending our guests transcripts at the same time we offer the final version of a podcast for listening can be an effective way of helping them re-engage in our production. Transcripts remind guests about the conversation, it help them find quotes to share.

Transcripts keep offering our content in-house and with you

We like to avoid third parties offering transcripts if we don’t do it by ourselves. E.g. Spotify is rolling out its own transcripts for all podcasts on its platform and as RSS feeds are open, there is nothing to stop other platforms from hosting transcripts of our shows. On the one hand, this seems like a good step for accessibility. But these are going to be automatic transcripts, and won’t be checked for accuracy. Mistakes can be worse for access if it obscure or change meaning, and this is more likely to occur in the less common and more specialist content.

It also takes this content away from us as the creator and brings listeners to the big platforms (Spotify, Google Podcast, Apple Podcast etc. ...), not where we want our listeners to go (such as our website). This is great for places like Spotify that want to increase their market share of listeners. But it means we are competing against them for SEO (search engine optimisation).

Maverick's Cove likes to offer its own transcripts, and we are more likely to keep our audience coming to Maverick's Cove for the right information.
